...Merck, which pulled Vioxx from the market in late 2004 over safety concerns, faces almost 7,000 lawsuits over the drug."Last year, there was lots of fear about pharma legal issues," said Shibutani, noting that Lilly's and Pfizer's recent court wins have heartened investors.

"It's a positive for the group," said Shibutani, of the "Investors now see that intellectual property is not being chopped off at its knees."Shibutani added that after three Vioxx verdicts, investors appear a little more at ease, now that they have more visibility into the litigation."People are now having more reasons to be positive about the products," said Shibutani.The lure of niche markets Another trend that will be discussed this year is the subtle move by some of Big Pharma away from blockbuster drugs for huge patient populations and towards specialty drugs, such as those developed by biotech companies, which are easier to market."We're starting to see a changing of the pharmaceutical model from primary products to specialty products," said Shibutani, adding that Wyeth, Bristol-Myers and Merck, in particular, are repositioning themselves in this manner.

Wyeth and Merck will both be presenting at the conference.As the trend continues, Shibutani says investors will see the already fuzzy line between biotechnology and pharmaceuticals blurred ...
