Earnings Preview: Eli Lilly & Co.

...Bear Stearns' John Boris is forecasting earnings of 79 cents per share, but warned that if Prudential's Tim Anderson raised his earnings estimate for the year by 1 cent to $2.85 per share, while expecting worldwide sales to drop 10 percent to $491 million from a year ago.

The analyst consensus estimate for the year is $2.85 per share in earnings on total revenue of $14.65 billion.

Citigroup's George Grofik expects fourth-quarter earnings per share of 78 cents, and worldwide QUARTER DEVELOPMENTS: In October, Lilly and Johnson & Johnson biotech unit Centocor Inc.

permanently suspended enrollment for a clinical trial studying the blood thinner ReoPro to treat acute strokes, citing safety concerns.

In December, Lilly said it plans to file with the Food and Drug Administration to have its antidepressant Cymbalta approved for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder.

The company also said last month it would plead guilty to a misdemeanor and pay $36 million to settle charges of off-label promotion of its Evista osteoporosis treatment in 1998.

...Lilly's primary growth driver, antidepressant Cymbalta, has slowed lately and safety concerns have clipped sales of attention deficit disorder drug Strattera.

"Lilly has been more innovative than most other companies but done worse at execution," said Barbara Ryan an analyst at Deutsche Bank.

"There's betting on a pipeline that hasn't panned out in the past." In each of the last four years, analysts earnings projections fell through the 12 months, according to Zacks, reflecting negative developments or sentiment.

"The company is not without controversy," said Schott.

Yet, he is willing to trust Lilly because he likes the management and the strategy.

Born in Morocco and fluent in four languages, Taurel is a favorite among analysts for his direct but personable style.

Taurel acknowledged some products' performance has been disappointing, most notably Xigris, an expensive biotech drug against sepsis which is only effective in a limited population.

"We had so many new products in a short time that maybe we didn't do the best job with each," Taurel concedes.

Taurel said he was dismayed by the slowdown in Cymbalta prescriptions but has taken steps to boost sales.
