The jail is housing about 240 inmates, about 20 percent of which have mental health issues.“This is what we usually have during our peak summer months,” Orange County Sheriff Mike White said.

“We expect the number to grow significantly.”White broached the subject of mental illness Monday with commissioners.“This is one of our biggest problems,” White said.

“Our jail is becoming a mental health facility and they are blowing our medical budget because of the high dollar medications.”The medications are to help keep the inmates controllable, White said.“A lot of the inmates come in with ...
