Lilly Reports Fourth-Quarter Profit on Sales of Antidepressant

... Net income was $700.6 million, or 64 a share, compared with a loss of $2.4 million, or less than a cent a share in the 2004 quarter, the Indianapolis-based drugmaker said today in a statement.

Lilly incurred the tax on $8 billion in overseas profits returned to the U.S.

Revenue rose to $3.88 billion from $3.64 billion.

Sales of Cymbalta, approved for U.S.

sale in August 2004, more than tripled.

The product is helping Chief Executive Officer Sidney Taurel to compensate for slowing sales of Lilly, which introduced the now-generic Prozac antidepressant in 1986, needs to rebuild its franchise in such central nervous system treatments, said JPMorgan Securities analyst Chris Shibutani in New York.

``Cymbalta has to be successful,'' said Shibutani, who doesn't own the stock, in an interview last week.

``Its importance lies in the expectation that it has blockbuster potential, and it is the most important of the company's new products.'' New drugs including Cymbalta will account for 24 percent of 2006 sales after a projected 18 percent in 2005 and 11 percent the year before, the company said in December.
