Frederick Kelso said Westbrook has been hospitalized for his illness in the past and was quiet, distant, depressed and sad Thursday.

"He plainly told me at one point, ’I don’t know why I’m here’" Kelso told Assistant District Attorney Jacqueline Shanahan.

Westbrook, 20, of 25 Cheney St., was charged with home invasion and two counts of armed assault with intent to murder when he was arrested about 2:30 a.m.

yesterday, District Attorney spokeswoman Kathryn Norton said.

He was arrested when an officer found him walking near the intersection of Mechanic and Cheney streets, hours after the 8 p.m.

attack.

He was hostile, uncooperative and swore at police during booking, according to a police report.

He also refused to be fingerprinted.

Westbrook was ordered by Newton District Court Judge Margaret Zaleski, on the advice of his attorney, Arthur Kelly, and Kelso, to undergo a psychiatric evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital.

"I have concerns about (Westbrook’s) ability to stand trial," Kelso said.

Westbrook pleaded not guilty, but did not appear in the courtroom during his arraignment yesterday.

He stood out of sight of news cameras as he spoke to Zaleski.

He is expected back in Newton District Court Jan.

Westbrook is accused of walking through Claudia and Jin Chung’s unlocked kitchen door at 21 Cheney St.

with a knife about 7:50 p.m.
